The North West HIV Physicians Group needed a website to act as a portal for the organisations that they represent, primarily for holding documents and announcing the release of new drugs and upcoming meetings around the country.

large caption from the nwhiv.org site The site is built around the excellent Joomla!CMS, which had the necessary components for the job. Heavily customised, this system allows doctors and nurses from around the country to access important documentation for their respective organisations, and also view upcoming events through the calendar facility.

Joomla was the obvious choice from the outset for this project, with it's excellent document manager and Open Source Values. Our choice was further validated after the Mambo, upon which Joomla! is based won the prestigious "Best Open Source Solution" prize at the San Francisco LinuxWorld Conference and Expo. Defeating the likes of Firefox, IBM and LTSP, when being judged for the best of the best at San Francisco LinuxWorld Conference and Expo, at the Moscone Center. This is in addition to other awards Mambo has collected over the past 12 months, including: "Best of Show", multiple "Best Open Source Solution" at LinuxWorld expos and being voted "Best Free Software Project of the Year" in the UK's LinuxFormat magazine.

For the North West HIV Physicians website, a custom template was produced. The art direction aimed to get away from the drab-ness typically associated with medical websites, and present the organisation in a fresh, but professional manner. Based upon web standards, the template utilises a 100% CSS table-less design for the layout, possesses a semantic document structure (for screen readers) and is valid XHTML Transitional. As a national health website it also conforms the "Health on the Net Foundation Content Guidelines". It also meets the WAI Accessibility Guidelines at a Priority II level.

All in all the client was exceptionally happy with the result, and the site itself has been featured on three different gallery sites, managing to win awards for both Best Design, Site of the Day, and Best Content (mambowards.com).
