Access keys

This is a planned improvement to the site as soon as the programming for the feature is completed.

Standards Compliance

  1. Pages conform to the W3 Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, both priority One and Two where possible on the site.
  2. Where possible all pages validate as XHTML Strict
  3. All pages use structured semantic markup.

Navigation aids

  1. At the top of the page (beneath the banner) is a breadcrumb trail showing you exactly where in the hierarchy of the site
  2. At the very top of the page is a link to a sitemap, showing the Sections and categories of the site.
  3. A text-resize button has been provided on the right-hand side which allows users to bump up the text size across the site if they need to (and remember that choice - requires Javascript on)

Links

  1. Many links have title attributes which describe the link in greater detail, unless the text of the link already fully describes the target (such as the headline of an article).
  2. Whever possible, links are written to make sense out of context. Many browsers (such as JAWS, Home Page Reader, Lynx, and Opera) can extract the list of links on a page and allow the user to browse the list, separately from the page.
  3. Link text is never duplicated; two links with the same link text always point to the same address.
  4. There are no "javascript:" pseudo-links. All links can be followed in any browser, even if scripting is turned off.
  5. There are no links that open new windows without warning.

Images

  1. All content images used in the home page and all archives include descriptive ALT attributes.

Visual design

  • This site and all its archives use cascading style sheets for visual layout.
  • All decorative design images are served via CSS, and the entire layout scales with font resizing. It is also a liquid layout, allowing the width to expand and contract to fit the browser window.
  • If your browser or browsing device does not support stylesheets at all, the content of each page is still readable.
